New Study

Dust Particles Raise Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a widespread disease. Until now it has been believed that an overuse of common table salt was responsible. Now we are rethinking: A team from Barbara Hoffmann analyzed the health data of 4352 inhabitants from the Bochum, Mühlheim/Ruhr and Essen regions (Germany) in a study. The blood pressure levels were examined in relation to the long-term exposure to dust particles in the home. The exposure to course particles (smaller than 10 µm) and tiny respirable particles (smaller than 2.5 µm) were both considered.

The examiners discovered an association between gradual dust particle exposure in the air and blood pressure: with each increase of 2.4 µg/m3 in the concentration of the dust particles, the systolic blood pressure will raise 1.7 mmHg and the diastolic pressure by 0.8 mmHg. The association between the rough particles and blood pressure was similar. The increase in blood pressure was more pronounced in women than in men.
