Aeoretoxic Syndrome
Now it's Official: Air in Aeroplanes Often Contaminated
Punitive damages claims from an Australian stewardess against her employer and documentation fro the German air-traffic control have initiated a discussion which must be of interest to every single one of us. It deals with poison incidents in aeroplanes, which due to internal approximations from Lufthansa occur once every 2000 take offs and therefore appear multiple times every day. The problem: the cabin air in aeroplanes is drawn from the engine, and is not filtered. This allows heated oil fumes to reach the cabin through, pressure changes, congestion, ageing or failing gaskets. Such fumes contains numerous noxious substances, among which the cancer-causing beta-naphtylamin and the neurotoxin trikresylphosphate.
The Australian toxicologist Professor Chris Winder from Sydney has been studying toxins in aeroplane cabins for over 15 years. He says: “If the oil evaporates it can damage everything it comes into contact with.”
Have you ever become the victim of a oil poisoning in an aeroplane? Your nose knows. The evaporated oil smells like “wet dog”, “sweaty socks”, or vomit. Sometimes, a blueish haze will suddenly infuse through the cabin and leave a sweet-sour smell in its wake. A sure sign is the sudden experience of shortness of breath, headaches or nausea.
Our tip: don't fly without our binding agent Biologo-Rescue in your carry on, in order to quickly bind the toxins, just in case.
